Salome Thomas- El

Salome Thomas-ELSalome Thomas-EL was born and raised in the inner city of Philadelphia and has been a teacher in the Philadelphia School District since 1987. He received national acclaim as a teacher and chess coach at Vaux Middle School, where his students have gone on to win world recognition as Eight-Time National Chess Champions. Armed with only a chess board and a profound belief in their potential, Thomas-EL’s faith and commitment has motivated hundreds of children in Philadelphia to attend magnet high schools, major colleges and universities.

Salome Thomas-EL is a graduate of East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania. He is currently a doctoral candidate and has studied in Cambridge and London, England. He has received the Marcus A. Foster Award as the outstanding School District Administrator in Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania’s distinguished, Martin Luther King Award. Philadelphia Magazine honored Salome Thomas-EL as the 2006 “Best Philadelphian”. Mr. Thomas-EL frequently appears on C-SPAN, CNN and NPR Radio.

Salome Thomas-EL is married and lives in Philadelphia with his wife and two young daughters. He is the former Principal of John F. Reynolds Elementary School in North Philadelphia and the author of the best-selling book, “I Choose to Stay”. The Walt Disney Company recently purchased the movie rights to “I Choose to Stay”. His second book, “The Immortality of Influence” (foreword written by actor Will Smith), was released in May 2006 and stresses the importance of leadership, parenting, mentoring and service to others.

Currently, Thomas-EL is principal at the Russell Byers Public Charter School in Philadelphia and coordinates after-school chess programs in the School District. Mr. Thomas-EL has continued his life-inspiring chess and tutoring programs at Vaux and Reynolds. As part of his commitment to opening the world up to show his students that there are other ways to be than those to which they have been exposed, Thomas-EL takes them to visit colleges and then attends their graduations. Reflecting on how it feels to see a young person he has mentored walk down the aisle toward a real future instead of to an early grave, Thomas-EL has said: “I’ve been to too many funerals; I need to go to more graduations.”

Nevada state assemblyman Ruben Kihuen, a 27-year-old Mexican immigrant, is barely known outside his Las Vegas district. But he is being hotly pursued by Hillary Rodham Clinton, Barack Obama and the other contenders for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Mr. Obama summoned him for a tête-à-tête in his hotel suite at Caesars Palace. Christopher Dodd asked him to play a round of golf. Bill Richardson and John Edwards have sought his endorsement, too.

Mitrice Richardson

LOS ANGELES (CBS) It's been three weeks and still no sign of 24-year-old Mitrice Richardson.

Since the substitute teacher from Los Angeles went missing on Sept. 17, more than 180 officers and volunteers have combed the rugged heart of the Santa Monica Mountains, from the Malibu-Lost Hills station to the coastline.

Still no Richardson.

"I Just don’t know where she is," Richardson's great-grandmother Mildred Harris told
Crimesider in a Friday phone interview. "I love her so much."

Ironically, the last people known to have seen her alive were Los Angeles police officers. Richardson disappeared soon after being released from a sheriff's station in the middle of the night.

Richardson had earlier been arrested because she was drunk and unable to pay an $89 bill at Geoffrey's restaurant on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu about 10 p.m., according to her parents.

At the restaurant, Richardson joined a table of diners uninvited, appeared to be drunk or out of sorts, and finally could not pay her bill, say police.

Restaurant employees called the police. Deputies took Richardson to the Malibu-Lost Hills station and booked her on suspicion of not paying for the meal and possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore told the Los Angeles Times.

The marijuana was allegedly found in her white 1990 Honda Civic, which was impounded.

At the time of her arrest, restaurant employees said the young teacher seemed mentally disturbed, according to the
Los Angeles Times.

According to detectives who interviewed occupants of the table Richardson joined, she was acting odd, "giddy" and "out of the ordinary." She began "sprouting gibberish" and claiming she was from Mars, the paper reported. Other witnesses said she was drunk.

Richardson's mother, Latice Sutton, told a
CNN i-reporter that she believed reports that her daughter may have been having mental problems before she was arrested and was angry with police for releasing her without providing any additional medical care.

"There were subtle changes. She wasn't as concerned with her physical upkeep. She was texting strange things to friends, very subtle differences that only when looking back you could see the beginning of a problem," Sutton told the reporter.

But Richardson's great grandmother categorically discounted the theory that Richardson had mental problems.

"The reports being made about my granddaughter are completely out of character," she said through tears. "She is not mentally disturbed."

Deputies at the station thought Richardson was behaving normally when they released her early Friday morning Sept. 18, at around 1:25 a.m. "She exhibited no signs of mental illness or intoxication. She was fine. She's an adult," Whitmore said.

He also said the jailer offered to let Richardson stay through the night, but she declined.

According to Sutton, a manager she spoke to at Geoffrey's restaurant said Richardson appeared to be in "no condition to drive" while at the restaurant.

Sutton said she called the Malibu-Lost Hills station to ask about posting bail and picking up her daughter, but deputies told her they had released her because they did not have room to keep her in jail.

The sheriff's station is in a industrial business park that is unfamiliar to the woman, her family said. It is not served by buses at night, and family members say the woman has not contacted them or been seen since Sept. 16.

The woman's father, Michael Richardson, said he was worried about his daughter's mental state after seeing her booking photo.

"They allowed her to walk out of that facility and down that road in the pitch black night," he told the Los Angeles Times. "That's not right. Now, I just want to find my child."

The woman's mother said deputies told her nearby residents had called to say a woman was sleeping on porches, indicating to her that Richardson was stumbling around a nearby residential neighborhood early Friday. Her parents filed a missing person report with the LAPD.

The LAPD are also looking into homeless shelters and mental health communities.

"If she did have a mental breakdown of any kind and came in contact with a law enforcement officer, she may have been transferred to a mental health facility as a Jane Doe," LAPD robbery-homicide Detective Chuck Knolls told
Crimesider on Friday.

Richardson is a graduate of Cal State Fullerton and recently moved to Los Angeles to live with her grandmother near the area where she planned on teaching. Police say she last made contact with her family at her home in the Southeast area of Los Angeles on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

"I was pushing for her to get her master's degree," her great grandmother said. "All my great grandchildren look up to her."

Richardson is black, 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs about 135 pounds. She has brown, curly hair and hazel eyes, and was last seen wearing a dark shirt and blue jeans, police said. According to a flyer made by her family, Richardson has tattoos on her lower abdomen and behind her neck.

"Please pray for her," the great-grandmother cried. "She is my first great grandchild."

Police urged anyone with information on her whereabouts to call the LAPD's Missing Persons Unit at (213) 485-5381, or (877) LAPD-24-7 after business hours or on weekends.

Coach K

Some of you might still be thinking that you could still skip proper training and can just start coaching people based on your own natural abilities and supplemental information from such as article as the one you are reading now. Here are some cold facts about coaching:

Ø The fact that people ask you for advice all the time does not qualify to be a coach. Advising people are actually one of the most detrimental ways we tend to ruin other people’s lives.

Ø The fact that you are involved or serve in your local ministry, therapy, social services or other helping communities does give you the proper tools. These are great areas to conduct a certain type of counseling but they are uniquely different from coaching. It is important to note that those who serve in that capacity are able to transition well from their specific form of counseling to life coaching.

Ø Just because you consider yourself an intellectual machine full of fascinating and interesting facts that you may even think people need to start paying you for does not cut it either. Facts, expertise, and being well versed in a subject matter are not enough to change a life. Life changes are not easy accomplishments and the skills and expertise needed to take people from point A to point B are acquired through proper certification. The charisma and subject matter expertise and great public speaking skills are only supplemental information that at an appropriate time during a coaching session can help a client.

The list can go on but the whole concept and foundation of coaching is so drastically different than what most of the population thinks, that the only authentic and reasonable enough answer to believe you are qualified is if you believe it’s a calling on upon your life. There are probably very strong reasons you have concluded that being a life coach is your calling. If you are one of those people, why don’t you call us and find out if you really truly qualify. Kurtis Blow

In 1976, he joined a group called “The Force.” Russell Simmons was a member of that group. The Force sponsored parties around NYC until 1978, when Simmons was convinced by Kurtis to promote some parties in Queens, New York.[2] After becoming an MC on his own, Kool DJ Kurt changed his name to Kurtis Blow (as in body blow)[1]. Kurtis began to sell himself as “the number one rapper in Queens,” with Russell’s help[2]. Kurtis taught Russells younger brother Joseph, who at the time was known as “DJ Run, the Son of Kurtis Blow.” He later changed his name and went on to become the first third of Run-D.M.C.[1]

Kurtis Blow, one of the founders and creators of recorded hip hop/rap, stands as an emerging leader in a new generation of rappers with street sense, social criticism, and commercial savvy, a timeless artist and hip hop legend, Kurtis Blow has been instrumental in raising up a generation of MC’s, and he will soon carry the torch for hip hop music into new arenas.

In 1979, at the age of twenty, Kurtis Blow became the first Rapper to be signed by a major label. Mercury released “Christmas Rappin,” and it sold over 500,000 copies and it became an annual classic. Its gold follow up “The Breaks” helped ignite a still spreading international “Rap Attack.” He released 10 Albums over 11 years -- The first entitled “Kurtis Blow”, his full length debut and his second, a Top 50 Pop Album “Deuce,” a big hit across Europe; “Party Time” which featured a pioneering fusion of Rap and Go Go; “Ego Trip,” which includes the hits “8 Million Stories”, “AJ”, and “Basketball” and in 1985, “America.” “America’s video innovation received a MTV Monitor Award. From this album, the song “If I Ruled the World” became a top 5 hit on Billboard’s R & B chart. Columbia/Sony recording artist Nas debuted at # 1 on the Billboard’s Pop Album chart with a cover of the song in 1997.

He was honored to coordinate “King Holiday”, along with Dexter Scott King, a song to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King’s Birthday. The Mercury/Polygram single co produced by Kurtis Blow includes the collaborative efforts of Whitney Houston, New Edition, Stephanie Mills, El Debarge, James “JT” Taylor of Kool & the Gang, The Fat Boys and Run DMC among others. It has become an annual Holiday Classic.

Easy Mo Bee

In the early 1990s, he linked up with Bad Boy Entertainment and became their main staff producer, crafting most of the tracks for its first release, Craig Mack's Project: Funk Da World and the label's first major hit, "Flava in Ya Ear." He also produced "Party and Bullshit" for The Notorious B.I.G, the rapper's first single.

Subsequently he produced for both Tupac Shakur and Biggie. He is one of the few producers to have worked with both of them, most notably on the song "Running from the Police" (from the album One Million Strong), recorded in the same session by Tupac, B.I.G., Dramacydal and the Live Squad's Stretch. After producing with Shakur, then based in New York, on the rapper's Me Against the World--including two cut songs, a version of "So Many Tears" and the song "God Bless the Dead" (later found on Greatest Hits), both featuring Stretch--Mo Bee started on Biggie's Ready To Die. His production on both spawned hits and critical acclaim; he continued producing for Biggie on the rapper's second album. Bad Boy CEO Puff Daddyeventually asked to manage Mo Bee and for the producer to join his Hitmen production team; he declined, and Puff severed their ties. Mo Bee also produced the driving hit for Busta Rhymes's The Coming, the song "Everything Remains Raw."

James Walker

When I was 18, I was stopped on a moped by white police officers and rudely arrested, booked, finger printed and locked up as I tried to explain they had the wrong guy for the alleged stolen moped I was driving.

The police dropped all charges. But, I got the message quickly: I’m a black man in America and this is the reality of my life when it comes to dealing with police, so be quiet, shut my mouth and obey law and order.

Fast forward 25 years later, and some white cops often escort me via police cruiser to any of my properties or home or even the office building on occasion.

While I cannot make any excuses or justifications for the wrongful and ridiculous conduct of Sgt. James Crowley, who arrested the 58-year-old highly-respected professor, I can only say I am a bit taken aback that Professor Gates says that he now realizes “if this could happen to me in Harvard Square, it could happen to anyone in America?”

This statement has a duality that alarms me: Is he suggesting that because he was at Harvard, somehow he is exempt from the basic pains and struggles of folks in Harlem, USA vs. Harvard square?

Or, is he saying that it took this arrest and fiasco to get him in touch with the real struggles of the Black Community with regards to racial profiling?

Kevin Gray

In Kevin Gray’s new book take is radical…so his focus is always ample and humane. In these passionate pages, he takes his readers into areas of darkness—South Carolina’s heritage of slavery, for example—and into the vibrancy and heat of James Brown and Richard Pryor. In essays like “Why Does Barack Obama Hate My Family?” and “”Dixie 101,” Gray’s intellectual footwork is as sure as Muhammad Ali’s in his prime, and the knockout is as deadly.

No one should venture a mile into the rough terrain of black politics and culture in America today without reading Gray’s Waiting for Lightning to Strike. There’s no keener mind, no sharper eye focused on the condition of black politics.

Kevin Alexander Gray & his younger sister Valerie were among the first blacks to attend the local all-white elementary school in rural, upstate South Carolina in 1968. Since then he has been involved in community organizing working on a variety of issues ranging from racial politics, police violence, third-world politics & relations, union organizing & workers’ rights, grassroots political campaigns, marches, actions, and political events. He is currently organizing the Harriet Tubman Freedom House Project in Columbia, South Carolina which focuses on community-based political and cultural education. Kevin was a founding member of the National Rainbow Coalition in 1986, former co-chair of the Southern Rainbow Education Project—a coalition of southern activists—and former contributing editor of Independent Political Action Bulletin. He was also the 2002 SC United Citizens’ Party & Green Party Gubernatorial candidate. He was managing editor of The Palmetto Post and Black News in Columbia, South Carolina, served as a national board member of the American Civil Liberties Union for 4 years, is a past eight-term president of the South Carolina affiliate of the ACLU and an advisory board member of DRC Net (Drug Policy Reform Coalition).
